Interesting story about how the Elastic Four came to be:

It seems that Roy Frisby worked on banking, although he studied Voice in college. One of his accounts was the National Aluminum Corporation. The VP there was none other than Frank Thorne. The two met for dinner one evening in 1941 – at which Thorne had also invited Jimmy Doyle and Herman Struble. Frisby thought they were going to talk business, but Thorne had ulterior motives – he wanted to sing!

In preparation for the 1942 contest, the Elastic Four rehearsed eight hours each week to get ready for the quartet contest held that year in Grand Rapids, MI. They beat 60 quartets to win the Gold Medal!
